Who is Vaishali
She was born on 21 June 2001 in Chennai, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu — the same city that saw the birth of Viswanathan Anand. She learned to play as a child alongside her younger brother, and the family devoted its efforts to the chess development of both.
The result was extraordinary: both siblings reached the world elite. Praggnanandhaa, among the best in the world overall; Vaishali, among the best players on the planet.
The record-breaking pair
When Vaishali earned the full Grandmaster title in 2023, the Rameshbabu siblings became the first sibling pair in history to both be Grandmasters, a unique record in chess. Their story, grown in Chennai around a shared love of the game, is one of the most beautiful and inspiring in contemporary chess.
World title candidate
The great achievement of her career came when she qualified for the 2024 Women’s Candidates Tournament, the second-to-last step toward the world title. That year saw a curious coincidence: both Vaishali and her brother Praggnanandhaa played in their respective Candidates Tournaments, an unprecedented family milestone.
Vaishali thus confirmed herself as one of the great representatives of Indian women’s chess, heir to the path opened by Koneru Humpy and an inspiration to many young players.
