Blackmar-Diemer Gambit (1.d4 d5 2.e4): straight for the jugular
Do you prefer attacking to defending? Do you love romantic chess, full of sacrifices and checks? Then the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit is about to become your new obsession. 🔥
The main idea
After 1.d4 d5 2.e4, White offers the e4 pawn. When Black captures it, White recovers it with f3 (and if Black captures again, White really does give it away!) in exchange for something more valuable: blazing development and open lines to hammer the king.
- It’s a pure attacking gambit: material for initiative.
- The plan is very concrete: develop, open lines, and attack.
- It’s fearsome in fast games: opponents rarely know how to defend well.
The first moves
You play White. You offer e4, support it with f3, and after the trade, recover it with the knight, ending up with ideal development for the attack.
Who is it for?
For aggressive players who enjoy holding the initiative and aren’t afraid to sacrifice. If this style appeals to you, you’ll also like the King’s Gambit and learning to attack and sacrifice.

Preguntas frecuentes
What is the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit?
It's a gambit arising after 1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.f3. White sacrifices the e4 pawn for very rapid development, open files, and a direct attack against the black king.
Is the Blackmar-Diemer sound?
Theoretically it's considered dubious: with precise defense, Black keeps the material edge. But in practice, especially in fast games, it's a fearsome weapon because White's initiative is very concrete and easy to play.
How to defend against the Blackmar-Diemer?
The safest approach is not to cling to the pawn and to give it back at the right moment to complete development and castle. Defenses like the Lemberger (3...e5) or avoiding the capture with 2...e6 (transposing to the French) also sidestep the gambit.
