She was born on August 30, 1985 in Kharkiv, Ukraine. She established herself among the country’s best players and in 2012 won the Women’s World Championship in a knockout format. She reached her peak of 2452 ELO that same year.

Unexpected champion

Ushenina wasn’t the tournament favorite, which makes her victory even more impressive. She eliminated higher-ranked opponents and was crowned on her own merit. The following year, she lost the title to Hou Yifan.
