On 29 November 2024, the chess world experienced a historic moment in Singapore: a very young 18-year-old Indian player defeated world champion Ding Liren in the final game of the match, winning the title with a nail-biting game. Gukesh Dommaraju thus became the youngest world champion in history, breaking a record that had stood for four decades in the hands of Garry Kasparov.

Who is Gukesh Dommaraju

He was born on 29 May 2006 in Chennai, India, the same city that saw the legendary Viswanathan Anand grow up. He learned to play as a child and soon caught the attention of coaches: at just 12 years and 7 months he became a Grandmaster in 2019, one of the youngest ever to achieve it.

What makes Gukesh special isn’t just precocity, but the way he has developed. While many prodigies stall upon reaching the elite, he has kept improving nonstop, tournament after tournament.

The Candidates Tournament: the road to the title

In 2024, Gukesh won the Toronto Candidates Tournament, the most demanding tournament on the chess calendar, where the world’s best grandmasters compete for the right to play the World Championship. Winning that tournament at 17 was already a historic feat.

Months later came the moment of truth: the match against Ding Liren in Singapore, 14 classical games to decide the title.

In the last game, Ding Liren, in a drawn position, made a decisive mistake. Gukesh didn’t forgive it. A draw would have been enough to become champion… but if the opponent errs, you have to seize it. And that’s what he did. That last game perfectly summed up his maturity.

The player with the highest ELO of his generation

Gukesh is part of the so-called “2000s generation,” players born in that century who already compete at the highest level. In that group he clearly stands out: his peak of 2794 ELO points in 2025 makes him one of the strongest players on the planet.

At 18, he had already surpassed ratings that other grandmasters never reach in their entire careers.

His playing style

Gukesh has a style that combines several virtues. He’s not a one-dimensional player: he’s solid when the position requires it, aggressive when he sees an opportunity, and especially precise in endgames. This versatility is what allows him to compete on equal footing with the world’s best in any type of position.

One of his great reference masters is Anand himself, and that influence shows in his opening preparation: deep, systematic, full of novel ideas that disarm opponents in the first moves.

The second Indian champion

India now has something unique: two world chess champions. First was Viswanathan Anand, who paved the way. Now Gukesh carries the crown. Indian chess, which has invested in youth development for decades, is reaping its rewards.

In Chennai, the birthplace of both, the celebration was historic. Chess stopped being a niche sport and became, for a few hours, the topic of conversation for the entire country.

What’s coming

Gukesh is 18 and his ELO keeps rising. His first title defense will come in the 2025-2026 cycle. He potentially has decades of top-level competition ahead of him. If he maintains this progression, the question isn’t whether he can challenge Magnus Carlsen for the throne in the rankings: he’s already doing it.
