Before India became the new superpower of world chess, Pentala Harikrishna was already there. For more than two decades he has been a constant presence among the world’s best, a player whose solidity and positional technique make him one of the toughest opponents on the circuit.

Who is Harikrishna

He was born on 10 May 1986 in Guntur, in the state of Andhra Pradesh. India already had Viswanathan Anand as a global star, and Harikrishna grew up with that model. At 15 he was one of India’s youngest Grandmasters, and soon established himself as the second-best Indian player, a position he held for years.

In 2017 he reached his peak of 2766 rating, placing him in the world top 10.

The silent pillar

Harikrishna isn’t a headline-making player. His strength is consistency: year after year, tournament after tournament, he maintains a very high level without the ups and downs that characterize riskier players. His positional play is deep, his endgames are precise, and his opening preparation is solid without being spectacular.

He has been a pillar of India’s Olympic team for years, contributing to collective victories with his reliability.

Benchmark for a generation

The explosion of Indian chess — with Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi and Nihal Sarin dominating the circuit — has a foundation that includes players like Harikrishna. He proved that an Indian player could compete on equal terms with the world elite, and that paved the way for those who came after.

His chess DNA

In our chess DNA system, Harikrishna represents the solid veteran profile: refined positional technique, extreme consistency and a solidity that gives no chances away. If your GM twin is Harikrishna, your strength lies in patience, precision and the ability to win without overreaching.
