In 2004, a Hungarian was one game away from becoming World Champion. That player was Peter Leko, once the youngest Grandmaster in history and one of the great names in elite chess for more than a decade. Today, his voice is one of the most respected and beloved in chess as a commentator.
Who is Leko
He was born on 8 September 1979 in Subotica (then Yugoslavia, today Serbia), into a Hungarian family. A child prodigy, in 1994 he earned the Grandmaster title at just 14, becoming the youngest in history to achieve it up to that point. His precocity announced the era of increasingly young prodigies that would follow.
The style: iron solidity
Leko established himself as one of the best in the world with an extraordinarily solid style. Hard to beat, possessing refined technique and deep preparation, he won top-level tournaments like Linares 2002 and stayed in the world top 10 for years.
2004: at the gates of the crown
The great moment of his career came in the 2004 World Championship, in Brissago (Switzerland), where he challenged champion Vladimir Kramnik. Leko arrived at the last game with a lead on the scoreboard: a draw would be enough to be World Champion.
But Kramnik, in one of history’s great comebacks, won that last game with white and forced the final tie (7-7), keeping the title. As happened to Schlechter almost a century before, Leko was one game — and one draw — away from world glory.
The second life: commentator
After his stage as a top-elite player, Leko has become one of the most respected commentators and coaches in the chess world. His ability to explain the games of the best players clearly and deeply, combined with his kind, enthusiastic character, has made him enormously popular among fans. His knowledge, the product of decades in the elite, makes him an authoritative and beloved voice.
His chess DNA
In our chess DNA system, Leko represents the solid wall profile: extreme solidity, refined technique and a consistency that makes him extremely hard to beat. If your GM twin is Leko, your strength lies in positional solidity and impeccable defense; your biggest challenge, as in his 2004 match, is turning that solidity into victories when it matters most.
