There are players who seek perfection and players who seek beauty. Richard Rapport seeks something different: unexplored territory. Every one of his games is an adventure through schemes no one else would dare play at the highest level, and that makes him one of the most fascinating chess players of his generation.

Who is Rapport

He was born on 25 March 1996 in Budapest, into a family with a chess tradition. From a young age he showed uncommon talent and a personality that was reflected on the board: he had no interest in following known paths. At 13 he was already a Grandmaster, and at 17 he was among the world’s top 50.

What drew attention wasn’t just his level, but his style: unusual openings, forgotten gambits, structures engines don’t suggest. Rapport doesn’t play against the computer; he plays against the opponent’s mind.

The anti-engine

In an era where engine preparation has homogenized elite play, Rapport is an anomaly. He deliberately chooses positions not in the databases, where human creativity outweighs the engine’s memory. He has played lines like the Budapest Gambit, the Bird’s Opening or variations so rare they don’t have names, all at Candidates level.

His philosophy: if the opponent doesn’t recognize the position, it doesn’t matter that they have a higher rating.

World title candidate

In 2022, Rapport reached the Candidates Tournament in Madrid, the gateway to the World Championship. Although he didn’t win the tournament, his presence confirmed that his style, far from being a whim, could compete at the highest level. That year he reached his peak of 2764 rating.

In 2023 he switched federations, representing Romania, where he found better institutional support for his career.

His chess DNA

In our chess DNA system, Rapport represents the radical creator profile: high aggression, sharp tactics and a consistency he sacrifices for creativity. If your GM twin is Rapport, your strength lies in originality and throwing off your opponent from the opening; your challenge is maintaining solidity when the game simplifies.

Preguntas frecuentes

Why did Rapport switch federations from Hungary to Romania?

In 2023, Rapport decided to represent Romania instead of Hungary. The reasons included better institutional support conditions and a personal relationship with the Romanian chess environment. The switch didn't affect his competitive level and Rapport continues competing at the highest international level.

What makes Rapport's style so special?

Rapport is known for choosing openings and schemes that no one else plays at the highest level: forgotten gambits, asymmetric structures, completely original ideas. He doesn't seek the engine's best move, but rather the richest, most complex position where his creativity gives him an advantage. He's the anti-engine: he plays to surprise the human, not to refute the machine.
