In the dazzling generation of young prodigies that has taken India to the top of world chess, Vidit Gujrathi brings something different: the maturity of the strategist. A world title candidate in 2024 and a pillar of the Olympic champion Indian team, Vidit is one of the great names of his country’s golden age of chess.
Who is Vidit
He was born on 24 October 1994 in Nashik, in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Somewhat older than the youngest stars of his generation, he was world junior runner-up and rose steadily to surpass 2700 ELO points in 2019 and establish himself in the world elite.
The patient strategist
Unlike some of his younger, more aggressive compatriots, Vidit stands out for solid, positional, strategic play. He’s a player of great depth in understanding positions and good opening preparation, who builds his wins on solid foundations rather than seeking tactical spectacle.
That maturity and reliability make him a key piece of the Indian national team, especially in team competitions, where soundness is essential.
World title candidate
The great achievement of his career came in 2023, when an excellent performance at the FIDE World Cup earned him qualification for the 2024 Candidates Tournament. Playing in the Candidates — the second-to-last step toward the world title — is one of the greatest achievements possible in chess, and it confirmed him among the greats of the Indian generation.
That same year he was one of the pillars of the team that won India’s historic gold at the 2024 Olympiad, the country’s first ever in the men’s category, alongside young stars Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, and Arjun.
His chess DNA
In our chess DNA system, Vidit represents the solid strategist profile: balance between soundness and attack, refined technique, and a consistency built on positional understanding. If your GM twin is Vidit, your strength lies in strategic play and deep preparation; your chess is that of the mature player who trusts method and soundness over risk.
