In a world of attackers and tacticians, Michael Adams has shown for more than three decades that patience is the most lethal weapon in chess. Nicknamed “the spider” for the positional webs he weaves, the English GM has been England’s number 1 for most of his career.

Who is Adams

He was born on 17 November 1971 in Truro, Cornwall. He became a Grandmaster very young and quickly reached the world top 20. What’s extraordinary is that his peak rating (2761) came in 2011, at age 40, when he was sixth in the world. Few players improve with age; Adams did.

The spider

His nickname defines him: Adams doesn’t attack, doesn’t sacrifice, doesn’t seek brilliance. He weaves positional webs so subtle that his opponents don’t realize they’re trapped until it’s too late. His play is a masterclass in patience and technique.

More than 30 years in the elite

Adams has competed at the highest level for more than three decades, a longevity achievement few match. He has been a finalist in the FIDE world championship and has represented England in countless Olympiads.

His chess DNA

In our chess DNA system, Adams represents the positional spider profile: solidity, technique and consistency at their maximum, with minimal aggression. If your GM twin is Adams, your strength is patience and silent pressure; your challenge, positions that demand speed.
