Yasser Seirawan: the gentleman of American chess

Chess needs players who win games, but it also needs people who tell the story. Yasser Seirawan did both: four-time US champion, world top 20, and above all one of the best communicators chess has known.

Who was Seirawan

He was born on 12 March 1960 in Damascus, Syria, but grew up in Seattle, Washington. He learned chess young and progressed quickly on the American circuit. At 19 he earned the Grandmaster title and soon established himself as one of the best players in the United States.

Four-time US champion

Seirawan won the US Championship four times, establishing himself as the best American player of his generation. His style was positional and fluid: he didn’t seek direct attack, but the gradual accumulation of advantages with an elegance that made his games look simple.

In 1992 he reached his peak of 2640 ELO, placing among the world’s top 20.

The great communicator

Beyond the board, Seirawan became one of the best popularizers of chess. His Winning Chess book series is one of the best-selling in history, and as a commentator on elite tournaments he has made high-level chess accessible to non-specialist audiences.
