Old Benoni Defense (1.d4 c5): a direct strike at the center

Do you like asymmetrical, combative positions where each side attacks on a different flank? The Old Benoni Defense (1.d4 c5) strikes White’s center from move one.

The main idea

With 1…c5 you attack the center immediately and provoke 2.d5. Then you set up a closed structure with …e5 and …d6, asymmetrical, seeking counterplay on the wings while your opponent gets more space.

  • Strikes the center from move 1.
  • Creates unbalanced positions: no boring draws.
  • It’s the most direct and oldest version of the Benoni.

The first moves

PPractice: Old Benoni

You play Black. You strike with c5 to provoke d5, then close the center with e5 and d6. Asymmetrical structure: you concede space in exchange for flank counterplay.
