Döry Defense (1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 Ne4): the intruding knight

Want a reply to 1.d4 that’s truly rare and unsettles your opponent as early as move 2? The Döry Defense sends the knight to e4 without warning.

The main idea

After 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3, Black plays 2…Ne4, planting the knight right in the center. The idea is to provoke trades and simplification to ease the position.

  • It’s a surprise rarity: almost nobody knows it.
  • Seeks to trade pieces and relieve pressure.
  • Has very little theory.

The first moves

PPractice: Döry Defense

You play Black. You advance the knight to e4; when White challenges it with the knight to d2, you trade and simplify to ease your position.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is the Döry Defense?

It's the rarity 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 Ne4, where Black throws the knight to e4 very early. The idea is to provoke piece trades and simplify the position. It's uncommon and has mostly surprise value.

Is the Döry Defense good?

It's not top level: White keeps a small edge with sensible play (3.Nbd2 or 3.Nfd2, kicking the knight). But as a surprise weapon, especially in fast games, it can unsettle an unprepared opponent.

How to respond to the Döry Defense?

The simplest is to challenge the e4 knight with 3.Nbd2 or 3.Nfd2, offering the trade or forcing its retreat. After simplifying, White keeps more space and better development.
