Dutch Defense (1.d4 f5): the fight for the kingside
Looking for a defense against 1.d4 that doesn’t settle for equality? The Dutch Defense, 1…f5, is one of the most combative there is. You control the e4 square and, in many lines, mount a direct attack on the white king’s side.
The main idea
With 1.d4 f5 you state your intentions from the start: you want initiative and attack, not a quiet game. From there you choose between three systems with very different personalities:
- Leningrad: fianchetto the bishop on g7 (like in the King’s Indian) and attack with …e5.
- Stonewall: build a pawn wall on d5-e6-f5 and attack the kingside.
- Classical: flexible development with …e6 and …d6.
The first moves
You play Black. After 1.d4 f5 you control e4. White fianchettoes with g3-Bg2; you respond with the same plan: Nf6, g6 and Bg7, ready for the central counterattack with ...e5.
Why play the Dutch?
Because it gives you imbalance and attack from move one, exactly what you want if you’re looking to fight for the win with Black. In exchange, you take on a small risk (1…f5 opens the diagonal toward your king) and need to know White’s aggressive lines. But played well, it’s a fearsome weapon.
