The Elephant Trap in the Queen's Gambit Declined
The Elephant Trap is a famous trap in the Queen’s Gambit Declined. It’s played with the black pieces and is a simple trap that has caught many players, mostly amateurs and beginners. It can be attempted in faster time controls.
Origin of the Elephant Trap
The Elephant Trap owes its name to the “alfil”, the Spanish word for bishop that literally means “elephant” in Russian, describing the bishop’s move to b4 in the trap. If you want to know more about the origin of the bishop, click this link -> Meaning of the bishop in chess
The trap first appeared in the game Karl Mayet vs. Daniel Harrwitz in 1848, a game often called “the oldest trick in the book.”
Moves of the Elephant Trap
“The Elephant Trap” begins with 1. d4 d5 2. c4, the Queen’s Gambit line, followed by e6 from Black.

The game continues as follows, with the bishop and knights developing and pawns being traded:
3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Nbd7 5. cxd5 exd5
It looks like the d5 pawn is left undefended, and here comes White’s mistake: thinking the f6 knight is pinned and that this pawn can be grabbed. 6. Nxd5??

Here comes the trap! Watch closely.. Nxd5 7. Bxd8 Bb4+ 8. Qd2 Kxd8 9. Qxb4 Nxb4

What is the Elephant Trap?
The Elephant Trap is a tactical trap in the Queen's Gambit Declined. Black seemingly sacrifices material to trap a White piece, especially if White plays too greedily. It's a relatively simple but very effective trap against beginners.
How do you avoid falling into the Elephant Trap?
Don't grab material greedily without first calculating the consequences. In the Queen's Gambit, if Black plays ...Ne4 in response to Nxe4, you need to check for the follow-up check or tactical gain before accepting the material.
