If engines have made chess more predictable, Daniil Dubov is the exception that proves the rule. World rapid champion, Carlsen’s second, and creator of opening ideas that the whole world copies, Dubov plays such spectacular chess that it sometimes seems to come from another planet.

Who Dubov is

He was born on April 18, 1996 in Moscow. He grew up in the Russian chess tradition and soon stood out for a style that broke the mold: where other young players imitated their idols, Dubov invented. At 14 he was already a Grandmaster, and at 22 he was crowned world rapid champion in 2018, making clear his creativity also worked at maximum speed.

The opening revolutionary

Dubov doesn’t just play new ideas: he creates them. His best-known contribution is the Dubov variation in the Queen’s Gambit, a line engines rate as slightly inferior but which, in practice, generates chaos that favors the more creative player. The variation went from being a curiosity to being employed by elite players worldwide.

His philosophy is simple: if the opponent feels uncomfortable, the position is good, whatever the engine says.

Carlsen’s second

In 2020-2021, Dubov was the main second of Magnus Carlsen during preparation for the World Championship match against Nepomniachtchi. The ideas Dubov contributed helped Carlsen dominate the match. Controversy later arose when some of those ideas showed up in Dubov’s own public games, sparking an ethical debate that shook professional chess.

His chess DNA

In our chess DNA system, Dubov represents the profile of the sacrificing innovator: maximum aggression, overflowing tactics, and a solidity he consciously sacrifices in exchange for creativity. If your GM twin is Dubov, your strength lies in inventing over the board and making the opponent play your game, not theirs.

Preguntas frecuentes

What role did Dubov play in Carlsen's preparation for the World Championship?

Dubov was Magnus Carlsen's main second during his preparation for the 2021 World Championship match against Ian Nepomniachtchi. His creative opening ideas helped Carlsen destabilize his opponent. Controversy later arose when some of those ideas showed up in Dubov's own public games, sparking debate about the ethical limits of the coach-player relationship.

Why is Dubov considered a revolutionary in openings?

Dubov has popularized opening ideas that engines initially reject but that, in practice, generate extremely rich positions. His most famous contribution is the anti-Marshall variation of the Queen's Gambit (the 'Dubov variation'), which elite players around the world came to adopt. His approach is: if the position is complex and uncomfortable for the opponent, the engine's centipawns don't matter.
