King and Pawn Against King Endgame: how to win and how to draw

The king and pawn against king endgame is the most fundamental endgame in chess. If you truly understand it, you hold the key to almost every pawn endgame. Let’s see exactly when the side with the pawn wins and when the lone king manages to save itself with a draw.

The idea: win or draw?

There’s no mystery here: the goal of the side with the pawn is always to promote the pawn and turn it into a queen. The defender, with only their king, can’t prevent it… unless they know the secrets of this endgame.

What’s the secret? Opposition. Two kings have the opposition when they’re on the same rank or file separated by exactly one square, and it’s the opponent’s turn to move. The king that doesn’t move has the opposition, and that gives it the defensive advantage.

Once you master this concept, you’ll start seeing endgames with different eyes.

When the side with the pawn wins

The rule is clear: the attacking king must place itself in front of its pawn.

Notice this: advancing the pawn isn’t enough. What decides the game is the position of the king. If the attacking king manages to get in front of the pawn and take the opposition away from the defender, the pawn will promote for sure.

The plan has three steps:

  1. Advance the king until you’re in front of the pawn (not the pawn first).
  2. Win the opposition: wait for the defending king to move so you can slip in one more square.
  3. Escort the pawn to the eighth rank. Promotion guaranteed.

And what if the defender uses the square rule to catch the pawn without the attacking king ever entering? Here’s the nuance: the square rule only works when the attacking king is far away. With the king close, escorting, there’s no escape.

The exception: the rook pawn

Here’s the trap that costs many people a point. With a rook pawn — the “a” file or the “h” file — the result is almost always a draw, even if the attacking king achieves the opposition.

Why? Because the defending king gets into the corner (a8 or h8) and you can’t drive it out from there. If you advance the pawn to the seventh rank with the defending king in the corner, you cause stalemate: the defender has no legal move and the game ends in a draw. The pawn reaches the eighth rank but with no cover to promote into a queen… and the draw is inevitable.

So with a rook pawn, unless your king arrives in time to block the opposite corner, accept the draw and save your energy.

Zugzwang: your best ally

There’s another concept that appears constantly in this endgame: zugzwang. It’s the situation where any move worsens your position. In the king and pawn endgame, the side that has to move loses the opposition and gives up ground.
